Mason Brooks and Jordan Wells

Mason Brooks and Jordan Wells became friends in second grade at a Baltimore gifted academy. They remained members of The Ride-or-Dies through Edgewood High School, graduation, and the start of their separate adult careers.

Overview

Mason and Jordan’s friendship developed through the larger group and a recurring sports rivalry. They shared school, travel, gaming, crisis response, and the friends’ last summer together before college took Jordan to Washington, D.C.

Foundation of the Friendship

Mason and Jordan became friends with Logan Weston and Malik Carter in second grade; James Pennington joined the group in third grade after moving from England. Mason and Jordan both defended Logan during his bullying from third through eighth grade. They later attended Edgewood together and remained close to Logan during his senior year.

Mason’s humor gave the group levity, while Jordan’s quiet attention gave others space to process difficult experiences. Mason could fill a room with laughter; Jordan could remain beside someone without requiring conversation. Both approaches helped sustain their ordinary time together and their responses to crises.

Dynamics and Communication

Mason regularly riled Jordan up by challenging him about sports, one of the few subjects that could reliably draw the quiet basketball player into an animated argument. During a senior-year basement game, Jordan and Malik were already debating basketball statistics, and Mason complained that their “basketball nerd-off” was delaying the game. His irritation in that moment existed alongside the longer-running Mason–Jordan rivalry.

The two friends took different practical roles when Jacob became faint at school. Mason brought Logan’s car to the side entrance and communicated with the teaching assistant, while Jordan used his body to block other students’ stares as Jacob left.

At the Weston family’s summer 2025 barbecue, Jordan answered Mason’s claim that he was building a music empire with, “You got something.” After Mason responded, Jordan added, “I didn’t say what.” His concise, deadpan answer punctured the boast without interrupting their enjoyment of the afternoon.

Cultural Context

Mason was White American and Jordan was Black American. Mason grew up in close friendship with Logan, Malik, and Jordan and developed awareness of racial pressures through that sustained relationship. He was the group’s first White member, followed by James. Their shared history did not make the risks facing the three Black members identical to those facing Mason and James.

In a tense police encounter involving the friends, Logan felt Mason move closer and heard Malik stop laughing. Mason’s movement was protective, although officers did not read his White body as they read his Black friends’ bodies. In a separate stop when Logan was twelve, Jordan tugged Logan’s backpack strap and quietly told him to comply with an officer’s demand. Jordan drew on danger learned through Black family and community life. The two encounters showed how both friends responded to threats while facing different risks themselves.

Jordan’s awareness of danger included threats specifically directed at Black boys. He protected Mason as a friend he had claimed as family, without assuming that they faced identical risks. Mason’s different exposure to those threats did not diminish his loyalty or fear for his friends. When a counselor told Jordan to “reconsider aiming too high,” Mason urged him to report it. Mason’s humor also gave the friends relief during time together, even when other parts of their lives demanded vigilance.

Shared History and Milestones

Mason and Jordan joined Malik and James on the ten-day Caribbean cruise for Logan’s sixteenth birthday in spring 2024. Mason’s physical comedy and trash talk and Jordan’s participation in karaoke, games, and bets helped Logan enjoy being imperfect and ridiculous with friends. Both graduated from Edgewood in 2025. Jordan then left for Georgetown University, while Mason stayed in Baltimore, Maryland and began early music-production work.

At the church vigil during Logan’s coma after the December 2025 collision, Mason struggled to speak about his friend. Jordan reached for Mason’s shoulder and joined the group around Nathan Weston. Their familiar comic exchange was unavailable in that crisis, but physical comfort remained possible. Jordan also needed Nathan’s embrace himself.
